Overly Complicated Headlights

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm a car guy, not a gear head, a car guy. More specifically a truck guy.
But don't get me wrong, I am not completely useless when it comes to doing stuff myself, or so I thought.
I went to change the headlamps on my 06 Equinox and thought it would be easy, it only took me 15 minutes to change the lamps on my Civic, so the Equinox should not be much harder right? WRONG!!!
Out to the yard I head tools in one hand, fresh lamps in the other. Git 'er done before the sun goes down, right? Wrong again! I had grossly under estimated how complicated this would be.
Step One: Read manual and find out how to access lamps.
Step Two: Pull 8 plastic plugs and remove 3 "screws". Simple right? WRONG! Plugs and 2 screws come out no problem. The third "screw" is a BOLT 15 inches below the top of the grill with ZERO room for a wrench to turn. NICE!!!
Step Three: Hunt for a 10mm socket and a long extension. Find it and discover the extension and and wrench are still an inch too short for any chance of the wrench being able to be moved.
Step Four: Shut the hood and work on it tomorrow, the sun has gone down by now.
Easy right?
