A new green space and playground is being built outside the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce, thanks to a generous donation from a local couple.
Elgin Warrilow and his late wife Shirley made a $100,000 contribution to the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce.
YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce CEO Gayle Graham says Elgin and Shirley lived, worked and raised their family in Owen Sound and discussed ways to give back to the city before Shirley passed away in 2017.
The couple established the E & S Warrilow Memorial Fund to support the community.
"The YMCA is so thankful for Elgin's generosity. We are excited to have a natural outdoor space where our community can come together with their family and friends," says Graham. "It will expand the community hub we currently have offering children an additional space to achieve personal growth in spirit, mind and body. The space will also be a great area for our YMCA Summer Camps, a program that gives local children an unforgettable summer each year."
Graham says the $100,000 will go towards creating a community green space at the back of the North parking lot at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.
It will feature a natural playground, a shelter and picnic tables.
Graham says construction will begin in August as part of the re-surfacing of the north parking lot at the YMCA.
It's expected to be complete in the fall.
