Unemployment Up Slightly In Region

Area from Stratford-Bruce Peninsula still among lowest jobless rates in province

Our area continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the province. 

In the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula economic region, the unemployment rate was 3.2 per cent in August. 

That's up a little bit from July's 3 per cent. 

The provincial rate is 6.1 per cent which is up from 5.9 per cent in July. 

Employment increased in the goods-producinge sector went up by 900 in the area.

The Labour Market Planning Board says 2,500 more people were working in construction while employment fell in agriculture by 200, utilities by 700 and manufacturing by 500.

Meanwhile the services sector was basically unchanged from July to August. The largest gains were 1,300 jobs in information, culture and recreation. 

Board Executive Director Gemma Mendez-Smith says some highlights were the announcement of up to 50 jobs with BWXT and Brotech jobs in the region as part of the Bruce Power Life Extension Project. 

There were 900  full time increases.
