You may notice some new window coverings popping up on vacant storefronts in downtown Owen Sound.
The City has launched a new initiative that will provide owners or realtors of vacant commercial property downtown with window coverings as well as information to assist with the beautification and promotion of the property.
Owen Sound's Manager of Community Development and Marketing Brent Fisher says the idea came from the Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee.
"With the committee's approval last year, we canvassed some of the property owners of the vacant stores about a couple of different ideas we had," Fisher says. "This was one that was certainly met with enthusiasm, something people would participate in."
Fisher says at least one downtown commercial property owner quickly indicated his or her willingness to take part when the city received the materials last week.
There are two different types of window coverings, Fisher says. One is a darker-colour with purple trim and features the text: "This building is not vacant, it's full of potential." A second style will feature brighter colours, a two-thumbs up image and the same text slogan.
"Rather than the brown paper or the vacant store fronts, this definitely adds a beautification element to it," Fisher says.
More information about the Vacancy Toolkit is available on the city's economic development webpage.
