Chesley Bridge Work To Resume

Chesley | by John Divinski

Finishing work on the Chesley Main Street Bridge is scheduled to resume on April 23rd.

Finishing work on the Chesley Main Street Bridge is scheduled to resume on April 23rd.

It means there could be more closures in the future.

The phrase "bridge closures" is likely to send chills up and down the spines of a lot of Chesley residents, after last year's closure and long detour.

However, Bruce County Director of Transportation and Environment Services Miguel Pelletier has indicated the remaining work may call for a partial closure of the bridge but would still allow traffic to move back and forth.

He hopes any closure will not last very long and every effort will be made to avoid full closures.

Pelletier says the work left to be done includes finishing the deck and the abutments on the bridge, along with curbs and gutters.

He indicates some water systems need to be a part of the bridge as well to complete the 3.2-million-dollar project.

It was February 2018 when the bridge was closed due to damage beyond repair, caused by ice floes.

It effectively divided the town in two with those north of the bridge and the downtown core south of the bridge.
