Alleged Gun Smuggler Arrested in Saugeen Shores

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

53-year-old man faces numerous charges as guns, ammunition and high capacity are seized by police in search.

A 53-year-old Port Elgin man faces numerous criminal charges related to weapons smuggling after multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a raid at a residence in Port Elgin on Wednesday.

According to a Saugeen Shores Police media release, the Saugeen Shores Police Service, the Canada Border Services Agency and OPP Weapons Enforcement Unit began an investigation into a resident of Saugeen Shores in mid-October for the importing of prohibited devices.

Police say members of all three agencies conducted a search warrant at a residence in Port Elgin Wednesday.

They say they found five gun silencers, five high capacity magazines, 19 registered restricted guns, 23 registered prohibited firearms and 33 non-restricted firearms ammunition.

This search warrant execution is believed to be related to a message Saugeen Shores Police sent out on Twitter Wednesday warning there was an increased police presence in a Port Elgin neighbourhood, but no risk to public safety.

The 53-year-old Port Elgin man faces charges including importing a firearm and smuggling a prohibited device into Canada.

Police have not named the accused. He was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody.
