Alternate Sites For Owen Sound Cell Tower Being Explored

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Rogers proposal in June was to construct a tower at west side marina.

A new cell tower proposed by Rogers Communications on Owen Sound's west side waterfront appears to be at a standstill, for now.

In June, the city was notified in a letter from Forbes Bros. Ltd. on behalf of Rogers Communications about a proposal to erect a 30-metre cell tower at Georgian Shores Marina on 24th Street West.

Bayshore Broadcasting News has learned Rogers is currently exploring alternate locations to the proposed site at the marina.

“We are exploring opportunities to enhance our wireless network near the Owen Sound marina for residents and visitors," a Rogers spokesperson says in a statement. "Based on feedback from the community, we are continuing to look for a site that meets local needs."

Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy says there was a lot of mixed feelings about the Rogers proposal.

"Because it was close to the waterfront it maybe would be somewhat unsightly or quite unsightly, depending who you are and how close you live to it," Boddy explains. "On the other hand, it's also important to try and get better cell service for our community."

Boddy says he'd like to see the new tower built at some point, but in a location where neighbours can approve of it.

"I think any big business doesn't want to get into a fight with neighbours," Boddy notes. "It makes sense that they consulted, got feedback and are pausing and looking for different sites."

If there are no suitable alternative sites, sources indicate Rogers may reassess the proposal for the marina as the site for a new cell tower in Owen Sound.
