Summerfolk Volunteer Recognized

Owen Sound | by Claire McCormack

Jon Farmer has been awarded the inaugural Gene Shay Scholarship from Folk Alliance International.

Summerfolk volunteer Jon Farmer has been awarded the inaugural Gene Shay Scholarship from Folk Alliance International and the honour is taking him to Kansas City, Missouri.

The award is named after legendary DJ Gene Shay and recognizes a DJ who is working with folk or world music and who has 1 to 5 years of experience.

Farmer is the founding host of Summerfolk's hour-long radio show Georgian Bay Roots which airs Sunday evenings on AM 560 CFOS in Grey and Bruce Counties and also is available online as a podcast.

Georgian Bay Roots was launched in 2016 to showcase the music from Grey Bruce  as well as folk and roots music from across Canada and around the world.

The episodes often feature interviews with musicians.

Farmer started out as the sole host of the show and now rotates shows with three other hosts.

Farmer began volunteering at the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival in Owen Sound while in high school and now emcees on the main stage.

Although Farmer has attended Folk Music Ontario conferences as a volunteer in the past, this will be his first trip to an international conference.

Farmer is "beyond excited" to be going to Folk Alliance and to be able to "dip my toe into the big waters of the music industry below the border."

"There are a number of acts showcasing officially that I'm a big fan of but I'm more excited knowing that I'm going to stumble on entirely new acts and musicians that will blow me away. says Farmer.

Folk Alliance International was founded in 1989 and is one of the five largest music industry conferences in North America. More than 2,700 musicians, managers, artistic directors, producers, and members of the media attend for the four-day event each year.

Farmer expects to come back with new music and interviews for Georgian Bay Roots. That new material will be on display when he takes his turn behind the microphone in March.
