The bus is coming to Sauble Beach this summer.
At the Bruce County Transportation and Environment Services committee meeting on March 18th, councillors agreed the county should enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Municipality of South Bruce Peninsula to provide financial support for a trial to provide a scheduled bus service for the summer, to Sauble Beach.
Services director Miguel Pelletier says the estimated cost for the pilot program is $35,000 and will be split 50-50 between the county and South Bruce Peninsula.
Pelletier believes there is a need for the service but they need data on the program to see if it will work.
County councillor and South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson says Grey Transit has been providing bus service between Wiarton and Owen Sound and hope they can expand to Sauble Beach to operate Friday through Monday in the summer.
Jackson says they’re hoping the plan will provide an alternate form of transportation for Owen Sound visitors and provide transportation for service employees who may not have a vehicle.
She says they’ll monitor the program closely saying “We certainly don’t want to put tax dollars into it if it’s not working so it’s a trial for everybody.”
The bus is expected to operate at 8:30am; 1:30pm and 9pm during the weekends.
Cost to users is expected to be less than $5 per trip.
