Attainable housing in Saugeen Shores needs to move ahead sooner rather than later.
In a report to Committee of the Whole on June 14th, CAO Kara Van Myall, states the complexity of attainable housing will require what is quoted as “a dedicated commitment over a period of years.”
She says, “Addressing housing challenges is not a project for the next year or two but requires a sustained approach to have lasting impact.”
However councillors like Vice Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt, who was also chair of the Attainable Housing Task Force, wonders if something can be done in the next few months.
He suggests perhaps a part time person on a short-term contract to help move the municipality’s housing agenda forward with tangible results by September.
Myatt says “Anything we can do to speed up the process would be a good thing.”
He also suggested a town land surplus inventory be done.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau agrees a town surplus land inventory needs to be done if they’re going to be armed with information in any talks down the road with partners on affordable housing.
He says they need to know where the opportunities exist.
