The federal election campaign period is now underway and at the onset of the race in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, only the incumbent Conservative Member of Parliament has confirmed candidacy in the riding.
Canadians will head to the polls on Sept. 20 after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a snap election on Sunday, pulling the plug on his Liberal minority government.
In Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, Conservative incumbent MP Alex Ruff is already on the campaign trail but other parties are still getting organized as the 36-day sprint to election day commences.
The Liberals, New Democrats, Greens and People’s Party have yet to announce candidates in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, a Conservative stronghold that has held blue since 2004.
The NDP have a local candidate selected who is awaiting final approval from the party. The vice-president of the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound NDP federal executive Rhonda Flanagan says the candidate will be acclaimed “very shortly.”
The Liberals are at the same stage as the New Democrats. The chair of the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Liberals Michael Johnston confirms the local riding association has a candidate who is awaiting the final green light from the party. He is hopeful the Liberal running in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound will be announced by Wednesday.
The Greens don’t have a local candidate yet. Green Party of Canada Chief Executive Officer Yves Rollin says the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound riding association is meeting Monday night to discuss options.
A People’s Party of Canada’s spokesperson says its candidate for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound is Anna-Marie Fosbrooke, a former mayor of Southgate.
