The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is looking for developers to submit proposals for new residential buildings in Wiarton.
Mayor Janice Jackson says a Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued this past week and will remain up for a month to look for qualified developers to submit proposals for town-owned lands at Berford Street and Jenny Street.
“The 22-acre site has been identified as the future location for a new Town Hall and Community Hub. The vision for the parcels surrounding the Hub is still emerging and the Town will look at developer proposals and prioritize them according to affordability, density, and market demand,” a release from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula explains.
Jackson says the two parcels of land on the east side of the property is the highest elevation in downtown Wiarton and it overlooks Colpoy’s Bay, making it an ideal opportunity for a developer to build condos and apartments.
She adds as they have a housing shortage in the area, they are asking developers to consider affordable housing in their proposals.
“This development will complement Council’s vision for the property around the Community Hub while working to achieve our goal of creating new housing opportunities for South Bruce Peninsula,” says Jackson.
The town will be looking for a proposal from the developer that is fiscally, socially, and environmentally responsible and adds to the quality of life of the residents.
“The development will create a unique and vibrant mixed use urban district in Wiarton in close proximity to the amenities of the Community Hub,” says Manager of Economic Development and Communications, Danielle Edwards.
Jackson says the need for housing does not only apply to South Bruce Peninsula, but the entire region.
