Whether it’s unseasonably warm or surprisingly cold, the weather impacts how we choose our outfits in the morning. It’s possible to be prepared without carrying a backpack full of backups, too. Check out these tips on dressing for unpredictable weather and incorporate them into your routine. Never get caught in the rain unprepared again!
Dress in Layers
Cobble together your outfit with multiple thin layers: a thermal shirt, a t-shirt, a cardigan, whatever you have on hand. Three or four thinner layers will insulate you more effectively than a single sweater. Plus, if you get caught in unseasonable heat, you can easily peel off one or two layers at a time, and it won’t take up much space in your bag.
Consider Colors and Fabrics
When you layer, make sure to choose colors that complement each other. Neutrals and subdued pastels or jewel tones are perfect for transitional looks, especially in fall and winter.
Read the label on any piece of clothing before you buy it. Natural is best! Cotton is absorbent, easy to clean, and popular in undergarments. Synthetic fabrics will keep sweat and oils trapped next to your skin and ramp up the stink factor. For extra warmth and water resistance, 100 percent wool is your best friend. Merino and cashmere will feel extra soft next to your skin, too.
Carry a Bag
Carry a bag, not a whole backpack! A tote or messenger bag is a perfect gender-neutral spot to store all the extras we’ll discuss below. You don’t need to pack it full of spare shirts or jackets; a few basic elements will keep you prepared for sudden downpours or cold winds.
Stock Your Bag
When you venture out into weather that may change at any moment, have a few staples on hand. Lip balm and hand cream come in handy in cold, dry weather. Sunglasses protect your eyes on extra-bright days. A retractable umbrella saves space in your bag and your hair and clothes from any sudden downpours. A scarf keeps you warm in the bitter cold, and it doubles as a head covering if your umbrella isn’t handy. Stash one extra pair of socks in your bag in case yours get wet. If and when you need to shed layers, a tote or messenger bag provides handy storage.
Never get caught in the snow or sun unprepared again! With a little extra time in the morning, you can put together an outfit that will serve you well, rain or shine. Remember these tips on dressing for unpredictable weather as the seasons change.
