Owen Sound Police say a man has been charged with arson after being seen lighting grass on fire across from Georgian College.
Police say the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on July 9 when a 28-year-old man was spotted by residents leaving the scene of a grass fire, which was set in the field on 8th Street East.
Police add after observing the situation, the residents were able to both contain the fire and keep an eye on the offender until Owen Sound Police and Owen Sound Fire arrived on the scene.
Police say members of Owen Sound Fire Services assessed the area and ensured the fire had been completely extinguished and prevented it from re-igniting and spreading in the large field.
Police add they arrested the offender in the area and seized evidence from the fire scene, which included an accelerant.
Police say as a result, the accused of no fixed address was charged with arson and failing to comply with probation orders.
The accused will appear in court in August.
Police thank each person who intervened as their selfless actions prevented the fire from spreading over a potentially large area and was crucial in the location and identification of the offender.
