A local volunteer group is hosting a fundraising polar dip event in Meaford this month to bring attention to the proposed TC Energy Pumped Storage project.
Save Georgian Bay member Pat Zita says the Dip on Feb. 25 aims to bring attention to the proposed project which seeks to provide clean energy to Ontario’s electricity system.
Zita says they are looking to bring attention to the potential environmental and financial impacts of the project.
“The Save Georgian Bay Association issued a Strategic Environmental Assessment report that challenges the claim of TC Energy that this project is ‘One of Canada’s largest climate change initiatives.’ As claimed, the proposed project will not reduce carbon levels in the earth’s atmosphere,” says the organization’s website. “Our research concludes a net increase in carbon emissions when all factors are considered.”
Zita adds they are not opposed to the project, however, if it accomplishes all it is set out to do.
“We challenge all those things and we voiced our opinion and we just want to bring that to the attention of all the citizens of Meaford and Georgian Bay and to citizens of Ontario because this has a huge impact in terms of energy costs,” says Zita.
The dip will be held at Fred Raper Park from noon to 2 p.m., with the actual dip occurring at 1 p.m.
Zita adds they are aiming to raise $15,000 to assist with various operating, project and legal costs.
