Grey Highlands is adopting its 2023 budget, which includes a 6.1 per cent tax levy increase.
During a meeting on March 15 council approved the budget, which will result in an additional $40 per $100,000 of home assessment.
Some major projects featured in the budget include:
-Renovations for the Markdale Library
-Kimberley Hall facade and roof repairs
-Bunker gear and equipment for fire services
-US replacement for municipal facilities
-Strong investment in asset management
-Pedestrian safety and crossing guard review
-Speed display signs
-Osprey Hall repairs
-Continuation of the SMART Transit System
-Hazardous Waste Program
Mayor Paul McQueen this year particularly tough for municipalities when considering the rising inflation and interest rates.
“We had to work together to balance providing the same core services at increased costs while improving our many facilities,” says McQueen.
During the budget process, residents were given opportunities to take part, including a pre-budget survey which launched in September 2022 to gather input. A second survey was issued in December, which received over 300 responses, before a budget town hall was held in February.
“I commend council for diligently working together to achieve a responsible budget that maintains the current service levels and continues to invest in our growing community. This is an example of fiscal responsibility, and I’m grateful that council is committed to a strong future for Grey Highlands,” says CAO Karen Govan.
