Testimony continued on Day 2 of a Meaford murder trial yesterday.
Matthew McQuarrie is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 25-year-old Emerson Sprung four years ago.
On Tuesday, the crown called the victim’s step-father and younger brother to the stand in an Ontario Superior Court of Justice courtroom in Owen Sound.
Stepfather David Elder was called upon first, answering questions about Emerson’s bike. He recalled intricate details about Emerson’s bike, including its unique colour and lettering.
Crown Attorney Meredith Gardiner then passed out an image to the jury and others of the bike recovered from the water at Memorial Park, and Elder said it was Emerson’s bike.
Emerson’s younger brother Ryden Elder-Sprung, 23, was then called upon to testify. He talked about his efforts to search for his brother after his mother Tracy Sprung told him he was missing.
He, along with family and friends attended Memorial Park May 5, 2020 to search for Emerson.
He says as he continued to search the neighbourhood, and he attended Lakeview Cemetery in hopes of finding some trace of his brother.
It was at a nearby bench where he says he found blood, hair and teeth.
Sprung’s body was discovered in a shallow grave at Lakeview Cemetery with multiple stab wounds. The OPP arrested McQuarrie and charged him with first-degree murder.
The crown is expected to start calling upon professional witnesses to testify via Zoom as the trial continues this week.
