The City of Owen Sound is inviting residents to take part in the first phase of public engagement to rename the park located at 823 5th Avenue East.
The park, formerly known as Ryerson Park, is undergoing a renaming process as part of the City’s Naming and Re-Naming Policy for Parks and Facilities.
In Phase 1 of the process, residents are encouraged to submit name suggestions until May 4 through the City’s online engagement platform. Suggested names should reflect the park’s location, neighbourhood identity, natural features, or community history, with a focus on names that include a locational reference.
Four names have already been put forward for consideration: Old School Park, Eighth Street Park, Boyd Street Park, and “Ningaawendam Miikana,” which means “Friendship Land” in Anishinaabe.
A second phase of engagement will take place later this year, allowing residents to provide feedback on the submitted names. Community input from both phases will be presented to City Council before a final decision is made.
Residents can learn more and submit suggestions by visiting the City’s OurCity Owen Sound engagement platform.
