A long-standing structure visible from the waters of Colpoy’s Bay is being demolished.
Work started on Wednesday to take down what’s known to many as the “big Caframo” building.
Caframo’s president Tony Solecki says in a statement the company engaged an engineering firm to assess the health of the building as part of its regular facilities maintenance and was advised the condition was deteriorating and they should plan to stop using it.
“Options to refurbish the building were considered, but it was not feasible,” a statement from Caframo says.
The building was constructed in 1902 by the Crown Portland Cement Company and then abandoned in 1914. It was put back into use after Caframo was founded in 1955 and began operating out of the former cement plant property.
Caframo’s Director of Product Development Dave Schnurr is an avid fisherman and says he knows hundreds of boaters over the years have seen the building and used it as a reference point for local fishing holes.
“We’ll be sorry to see it go. I don’t know if I’ll be able to find my favourite spot next summer,” Schnurr says in a statement.
The company has directed a webcam towards the building to allow the community to watch as the demolition project proceeds.
Caframo is a privately owned Canadian manufacturing company that makes products such as specialty fans, heaters and thermoelectric lighting.
