Georgian College’s Owen Sound campus is asking home owners who might have a spare room or a full unit available, to consider putting it up for rent for a student.
The college says listings can be posted on Places4Students.com. Georgian works with this company which specializes in off-campus housing for post secondary students, and will waive the fee for local landlords who list on it.
With the new nursing program opening at Georgian College in January, the college says it will bring hundreds of new students to the campus over the years, and fill critically needed registered nursing positions in the community.
Balaji Dhananajay, a student in the Marine Technology – Navigation program says having his landlord is a blessing.
“The best part about staying with her is she makes feel like I am at home, and it’s a feeling I really need as being away from my family is hard and she makes up for it as much as possible,” says Dhananajay.
Owen Sound campus Executive Director Dave Shorey says they have heard from Grey Bruce employers about the escalating labour shortage, and are responding with new programs and increasing enrolment for in-demand fields like engineering and health and wellness.
“The ability to find appropriate, affordable accommodations is an important factor for students who are choosing between Georgian and other post secondary institutions,” says Shorey.
Shorey adds housing a student can provide an opportunity to earn extra income, support a student’s success, and help the long-term economy in Grey Bruce.
