Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Conservative MP Alex Ruff is looking for community members to nominate someone they feel deserves recognition.
In honour of 70 years of service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Ruff is asking for nominations for constituents to be recognized with a Platinum Jubilee commemorative coin.
Ruff notes, the federal government did not issue medals or coins for Canada’s 150th in 2017, and it has not announced plans to issue medals or coins for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year.
He says a number of Members of Parliament decided to issue their own coins in recognition of the Platinum Jubilee, explaining, “A pile of us decided it would be a great way to recognize deserving Canadians, deserving constituents in our respective ridings.”
“It’s pretty wide open,” says Ruff, explaining, “They can be volunteers, people who have contributed through arts, culture or heritage, community builders, just good neighbours, community services, first responders, educators, community workers, business, enterprise or anything else.”
Ruff says he hopes to get a wide swath of deserving constituents from across the riding.
He says he has also reached out to all the municipalities in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound to encourage them to provide at least one nomination, so that those being recognized will be represented throughout the geographic area of the riding.
He hopes to receive more than 70 nominations to choose from, joking, “Make my life difficult– by providing good recommendations and good nominations, ” adding, “It will come down to how well people substantiate what they’re putting them in for.”
There is no age limitation for nominations.
Those who would like to submit a nomination can do so online at Ruff’s website, or can pick up a paper copy at the constituency office. You can also request to have a paper nomination form mailed to you. The phone number for the constituency office is 519-371-1059.
You can email the completed form to Ruff’s office with the subject line “Platinum Jubilee Recognition Nomination” or you can mail a paper copy to the constituency office at 1101, 2nd Avenue East, Suite 208 Owen Sound, ON N4K 2J1
The deadline to send in a nomination is June 30th.
Ruff hopes to present some constituents with the coins at his annual constituency barbecue on July 24th in Chesley. He also hopes to present coins to other recipients in person, and failing that, some may be sent by mail.
