The story of Billy Bishop is making its way to the stage in Owen Sound this week.
For one day only, the Roxy Theatre will be showing Billy Bishop Goes to War on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Roxy Executive Director Marcia Cunningham says they are partnering with the Billy Bishop Museum to put on this award-winning Canadian musical paying tribute to Owen Sound’s World War 1 hero and ace pilot.
This two-man show features Matt Evans as Bishop and 15 other roles.
“Billy Bishop Goes to War is a Canadian classic, it’s a musical, it’s a drama, it’s a comedy, it’s a fun night out. What it does, which is great about localizing, is that he is a localized hero from Owen Sound. It talks about him and celebrates him,” says Evans.
Evans says the show touches on the life of Bishop and how he found his skills of being an ace pilot.
Evans has appeared in Canadian feature films including Beowulf & Grendel, Black Swan, Things To Do, and The Birdmen. He has also appeared in other Owen Sound Little Theatre productions like To Kill a Mockingbird, Children’s Hour, and Kiss the Sun, Kiss the Moon.
The Roxy says Evans will be accompanied by musician Michael Mulrooney, who co-pilots with Bishop, while playing various tunes from bar rooms to ball rooms.
“He’s played this show with various actors over the years, and he’s done shows like The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime, and Showboat,” says Evans.
Tickets are on sale at the theatre box office or on the Roxy website here.
