Saugeen Shores Winterhawks 4 Shallow Lake Crushers 0
Jeff Flagler posted the shutout for the Winterhawks
Jamie Shoemaker scored twice for Saugeen Shores who move up to 8th in the standings
from winterhawks.net
Jamie Shoemaker scored twice and Jeff Flagler recorded the shutout as the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks redeemed themselves against the Shallow Lake Crushers on Tuesday night at The Plex.
After dropping a 3-1 decision on Friday night in Shallow Lake, the Winterhawks came out with energy and controlled the game from the onset, cruising to a 4-0 victory.
The Winterhawks pressed early but were thwarted by Shallow Lake netminder Ryan Winter, who stymied the ‘Hawks four nights prior.
It didn’t take much longer for the ‘Hawks to break through, opening the scoring at 9:16 of the first period, when Jamie Shoemaker broke in on the left side and fired a shot past Winter to make it 1-0, with James McHaig and Trevor Smith assisting.
The Winterhawks kept it going and continued the pressure into the late stages of the first period, widening the lead to 2-0 when Justin Donnelly deflected in a point shot to make it a 2-0 Winterhawks lead, with Trent Hawke and Andy Fracz picking up assists.
Debuting Winterhawk Luke Pither gave the home fans a good taste of things to come, tying up Shallow Lake defenders in knots all night long.
Pither notched his first goal as a Winterhawk at 17:05 of the first, picking up a rebound off a Josh Hopkin shot and tucking the backhander into the top corner to make it 3-0 Winterhawks. Lauchlin Elder also picked up an assist on the goal.
The Winterhawks took a 3-0 lead to the dressing room after outshooting Shallow Lake 20-8 in the opening frame.
The second period was closer but Winterhawks starter Jeff Flagler was solid was held off the Crushers, while the Winterhawks were unable to beat Winter, despite some good chances in close.
Shoemaker put the game away in the third period with his second of the night at 5:05 when he knocked in the centering feed to make it 4-0. McHaig and Jordan Vanhaelemeesch assisted on the goal.
Flagler was solid when called upon in the third, holding the fort for the 25-save shutout as the Winterhawks outshot Shallow Lake 48-25 on the night.
Shoemaker was named The Wismer House Player of the Game for his two-goal performance.
The game was also a moment in Winterhawks history, as it was the 38th win of Flagler’s career, tying him for top spot on the Winterhawks all-time wins list with Nick Goetz.
He’ll get an opportunity to set the Winterhawks all-time wins record next Friday night, December 9th, when the Creemore Coyotes visit The Plex at 8:30 p.m.
