Arran-Elderslie council has signed off on a couple of contracts for infrastructure projects.
Council approved a recommendation at its meeting Tuesday to award a $203,000 contract to MacDonnell Excavating to complete subgrade work for a new road the municipality is constructing to bypass two old bridges on Sideroad 15.
It’s a project that’s been a long time coming. The municipality identified in 2014 that two existing bridges on Sideroad 15 had to be replaced because of their condition.
Arran-Elderslie initially prepared to replace them, but changed course in 2015 and entered into negotiations with a landowner to acquire property for a new road allowance which would bypass the existing watercourse.
A report by Arran-Elderslie Public Works Manager Scott McLeod says the necessary land for the project was acquired by the municipality in 2021.
“It’s about time we get this done,” Tara Ward Councillor Peter Steinacker says.
The project is expected to be completed this summer.
Arran-Elderslie council also awarded a tender at its meeting Tuesday for the Hamilton Street watermain replacement job. The $810,000 contract went to RF King Holding, the lowest of three bids.
A report to council says an Investing in Canada Infrastructure grant will cover around $312,000. The job includes watermain replacement, some storm sewers and road resurfacing.
McLeod’s report says the watermain upgrade will allow a new splash pad being built near the Tara Arena to become fully operational. That aspect of the project is expected to be completed to July 1 to allow the splash pad to be used this summer.
