Bruce County council has elected to support the Municipality of Brockton when it comes to court security costs.
In 2024, the province advised municipalities that host a provincial court would now have to cover the costs of security and prisoner transport.
Host municipalities have countered saying that surrounding communities also use the courts, and therefore should pay their fair share.
Bruce County is going to be providing funding on a yearly basis from its tax stabilization reserve.
Brockton sent a letter to county council late last year, looking for $250,000 in funding from the county. The topic was discussed at the December 5th county council meeting.
In the past six months both Grey and Huron Counties have received similar requests from Owen Sound and Goderich respectively. Both Counties have agreed to fund the costs not covered by the grant.
The county is expected to provide half of the funding required for 2025, which will work out to a 0.4% levy increase in next year’s budget.
