This year’s McHappy Day was a huge success.
The McDonald’s locations in Owen Sound, Port Elgin, and Meaford surpassed their combined $30,000 fundraising goal.
Owner operator Steve Sgro says that raising a total $41,323 was far beyond expectation.
“It was unbelievable, and we had such amazing support from the community.”
McHappy Day is the biggest fundraiser for McDonald’s, so it was an all-hands-on-deck situation for Sgro’s staff across five restaurants.
“It was amazing, not only for our staff, but to just have the towns support us in that absolutely amazing way.”
He said that with five stores to keep tabs on, he and his upper management had to divide and conquer to make sure everything ran smoothly. Sgro stayed on the west side, while his supervisor was on the east side. The operations manager was helping at the Port Elgin location.
“It was completely unexpected. We knew we were going to have a terrific McHappy Day because we were supporting the local hospital as well as the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities in London. We had absolutely no idea that the response was going to be as it was.”
The money raised locally for McHappy Day will help support the neonatal unit at Brightshores Owen Sound, as well as Ronald McDonald House.
Steve and Christine Sgro have been members of the Owen Sound community for almost 25 years, and one of their sons was born in the Owen Sound area, so it meant a lot to them to be able to support the local hospital as well as Ronald McDonald House.
“When you live in Owen Sound, you know that the local hospital, you know that the local hospital is one of the most amazing things that we have in this area,” said Sgro. “And to be able to team up with the local hospital not only support the hospital, but support the neonatal unit, and help them with their wishes and what they’re hoping for for new equipment, and the team at Brightshores that came out and volunteered that day is just so amazing.”
