Meaford Council will discuss a possible new telecommunications tower along Highway 26 tomorrow.
The new 106-metre tower by SLI Towers Inc. will replace a 99-metre tower about 700 meters north. The new facility is intended to improve telecommunications coverage along Highway 26, emergency management services, and public health and safety.
The application was submitted by SLI Towers Inc. to the Municipality of Meaford for the siting and construction of a telecommunications facility.
The site is not within designated heritage or environmentally protected areas, and existing fire access arrangements will be maintained. Although the development would occupy a small portion of an orchard, the location minimizes disruption to agricultural operations.
The tower would be built at 205630 Highway 26 with a major condition that the municipality receive written confirmation from SLI Towers Inc. that the facility will be fully removed when no longer required and that the site will be restored to an appropriate condition.
Removing the existing tower would also allow previously encumbered land to return to normal use. Surrounding woodlands are expected to provide some screening to reduce the tower’s visual prominence.
