Are the so-called bumpouts along High Street in Southampton, a good thing or a bad thing?
If you ask Doug Longmire, who gets around on a mobility scooter, he’s not sold on the bumpouts, particularly the one at the Huron and High Streets intersection by the Cenotaph.
Longmire says it’s time to do another study on the controversial bumpouts, which were a bone of contention for many when first introduced several years ago.
He says travelling east and west at the Huron/High interesection, to or away from the big flag, is not fun saying he’s monitored the area several times and has had what he calles “near death” experiences.
He says he only crosses now when people are crossing because cars seem to stop for people but not for anything else.
The bumpouts were put in to make it more safe for pedestrians to cross High Street but in a north-south direction–not east/west.
Council will pass on the Longmire information to the police board and it was suggested he make a presentation to the Southampton BIA, which is revisiting the streetscape plan of High Street.
